Trump's activities started before taking power
Before Donald Trump took office in January 2017, his activities were largely centered around his career in business, media, and politics. Here’s a summary of his major activities during that time:
Business Career: Donald Trump was primarily known as a real estate mogul, with a vast portfolio of properties including hotels, office buildings, golf courses, and casinos. He inherited his family's real estate business, the Trump Organization, and expanded it globally. His branding strategy, which involved licensing his name for a wide range of products, helped him gain widespread recognition.
Media Presence: Trump became a pop culture figure, particularly with his role in the reality TV show The Apprentice, which premiered in 2004. The show's success cemented his status as a celebrity businessman. His catchphrase, “You’re fired,” became iconic, and the show helped him build a larger-than-life public persona.
Political Involvement and Public Life: Although Trump was not a politician prior to his presidency, he had flirted with political ambitions for years. He made several public statements about running for office and speculated about potential bids for the presidency, notably as a Republican and sometimes as an independent. He expressed interest in running in the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s but did not formally campaign until 2015.
2016 Presidential Campaign: In June 2015, Trump announced his candidacy for president as a Republican. His campaign quickly gained traction, fueled by his unorthodox style, blunt rhetoric, and promises to “Make America Great Again.” His platform included opposition to illegal immigration, skepticism of free trade deals, and promises to revive American manufacturing jobs. Trump's populist appeal resonated with many voters, particularly those disillusioned with the political establishment. He ran a highly unconventional campaign, using social media, especially Twitter, to communicate directly with his supporters and bypass traditional media.
Controversies: Trump’s career and public persona were often marked by controversy. He faced criticism for his business practices, particularly in relation to his casinos and the bankruptcy filings of some of his ventures. His rhetoric was also frequently divisive, and he was known for making inflammatory statements, both in public appearances and on social media. His comments about Mexican immigrants, women, and other groups sparked significant backlash, but his supporters viewed his bluntness as a sign of authenticity.
The newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, has begun acting on several key campaign promises, signaling his approach to both global and domestic issues. With the current geopolitical challenges, Trump has initiated efforts to address the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, peace in Gaza, domestic immigration policies, and the organization of his administration.
Trump, who won the November 5 election, is set to officially take office on January 20 as the 47th President of the United States, succeeding Joe Biden.
Efforts to End the Russia-Ukraine War
According to a report from The Washington Post, Trump has already reached out to Russian President Vladimir Putin in an attempt to de-escalate the conflict in Ukraine. The report indicated that Trump urged Putin not to expand the war, although the Kremlin quickly denied these claims, calling the report "completely fictitious." Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed any talks with Trump as "totally untrue," asserting that no such discussion had taken place.
Despite the Kremlin’s denial, the report stoked hope that Trump, known for his stance of wanting to end the war swiftly, might play a pivotal role in de-escalating the conflict. During his campaign, Trump promised he could bring peace to Ukraine within 24 hours of assuming office, though he did not provide specific details on how he would achieve this. The war, now in its third year, is at a dangerous juncture, with Russian forces making significant advances despite the efforts of Ukraine's military and its Western allies.
Earlier, Trump also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, with tech mogul Elon Musk joining the conversation as a supporter of Trump's vision. In parallel, Trump has been in contact with other world leaders, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, to discuss ongoing geopolitical issues and ways to restore stability in Europe.
In addition to his efforts on the European front, Trump has expressed a desire to work toward peace in Gaza. He held a conversation with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and indicated his interest in pursuing a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has long aligned with Trump on Middle East issues, welcomed Trump's victory, noting that both leaders share a common vision regarding the threat of Iran and broader regional security concerns.
While addressing global issues, Trump has also begun organizing his domestic administration. With the Republican Party holding a majority in the Senate and approaching control of the House of Representatives, Trump is positioned to make key appointments that align with his vision.
He has already named Tom Hoffman, a staunch anti-immigration advocate, to play a significant role in strengthening border security. Additionally, Trump appointed Suzy Wiles as his White House Chief of Staff, signaling a return to a familiar team of loyalists from his previous administration.
Trump has also made significant nominations for key diplomatic positions, including the selection of Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) as his nominee for U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. If confirmed, Stefanik, a prominent Republican voice, would take on a central role in representing the U.S. on the global stage during Trump’s next term.
As Trump prepares to take office, his early moves are already drawing attention to his commitment to fulfilling his campaign promises, particularly regarding global peace efforts, immigration policy, and the shaping of his administration.
