For the first time in history, a pug has claimed the Best in Show title at the National Dog Show.

Vito, a pug from North Carolina, triumphed over more than 1,900 dogs at the event, which is hosted by the American Kennel Club. This year's competition took place at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pennsylvania. Vito first won the Toy Group, which included 24 breeds, as reported by NBC, the network that broadcasts the show. He then faced off against six other group winners to secure the coveted Best in Show title.

At 18 pounds, Vito made history as the first pug to win this prestigious honor. His handler, Michael Scott, also earned a grand prize of $20,000.

A Welsh Terrier named Verde was awarded Reserve Best in Show at this year's National Dog Show.

A total of 205 breeds and varieties competed, according to NBC, including a new addition: the Lancashire Heeler. Although the breed has been recognized in the United Kingdom since 1981, it was officially added to the American Kennel Club’s list of recognized breeds earlier this year.
