Mysterious Drones Spotted Above Three U.S. Air Bases in the UK
Several small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, have been spotted over and around three U.S. air bases in the UK, the U.S. Air Force (USAF) has confirmed.
The affected airfields are RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, and RAF Mildenhall and RAF Feltwell in nearby Norfolk. The drones were observed between Wednesday and Friday of last week.
While the USAF has not confirmed whether the drones pose a security threat, it has acknowledged the sightings. The Air Force also declined to comment on whether any defense systems were activated in response, though they emphasized that they retain the "right to defend" their installations.
A USAF spokesperson in Europe said: "We can confirm that small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been seen in and around RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall, and RAF Feltwell."
The spokesperson added, "These UAVs have been closely monitored. Base leadership has confirmed that there was no damage to personnel or critical infrastructure as a result of these incursions. We will continue to monitor the situation and work with local authorities and mission partners to ensure the safety of our personnel, infrastructure, and assets."
A representative from the UK Ministry of Defence stated, "We take these threats very seriously and have implemented robust measures to safeguard the security of these bases."
