World's 'Largest' Gold Mine Discovered in China, May Contain 1,000 Tons
A massive gold mine has been discovered in China's Hunan Province, with researchers estimating its gold reserves at 1,000 tons, potentially making it the largest gold mine ever found. The discovery was made in Pingjiang County, located in the northeastern part of the province, and the total value of the gold in the mine is estimated to be around 600 billion yuan. If confirmed, it would surpass all previously discovered gold mines, including South Africa's South Deep mine, which holds around 930 tons of gold.
The mine's discovery was announced by the Hunan Geological Bureau, which revealed that excavation efforts have unearthed 40 gold veins at a depth of 2,000 meters, containing approximately 30 tons of gold. Using advanced three-dimensional geological survey technologies, researchers have identified an even larger gold deposit at a depth of 3,000 meters. This breakthrough has the potential to significantly impact China’s gold industry and strengthen the nation’s overall mining sector and economic power.
Chen Ruolin, an expert at the China Geological Bureau, shared with the state-run Xinhua news agency that gold was found in multiple locations during excavation, confirming the vastness of the find. Liu Yongjun, deputy head of the Bureau, explained that the Wanggu gold mine has benefited from cutting-edge technologies, including three-dimensional geological surveys, which have helped locate additional gold deposits around the mine.
If the estimates prove accurate, the newly discovered gold mine in Hunan could surpass all existing records for gold reserves. Before this discovery, the South Deep Gold Mine in South Africa was considered the world's largest, with an estimated 930 tons of gold in reserve.
Currently, the largest gold mines in the world include South Africa’s South Deep Gold Mine, Indonesia’s Grasberg Gold Mine, Russia’s Olympiada Gold Mine, Papua New Guinea’s Lihir Gold Mine, Chile’s Norte Abierto Gold Mine, the United States' Carlin Trend Gold Mine, Australia’s Boddington Gold Mine, South Africa’s Mponeng Gold Mine, the Dominican Republic’s Pueblo Viejo Gold Mine, and the United States' Cortez Gold Mine. The recent discovery in Hunan, however, could soon take the top spot in this prestigious list.
