Trump's new threat, 100 percent tariffs if the BRICS currency is introduced to drive away the dollar

The newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, has issued a stern warning to the BRICS nations, forbidding them from introducing a new currency that could replace the U.S. dollar in global trade. He also prohibited any support for currencies aimed at challenging the dominance of the dollar. Trump threatened to impose tariffs as high as 100% on goods from these countries if they do not comply.

Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating, "We want a commitment from these countries that they will not create a new BRICS currency or support any currency that seeks to replace the strong US dollar." He made it clear that failure to secure this promise would result in severe consequences, including "100 percent tariffs."

Reuters reported that Trump further warned that if BRICS nations did not comply, they could expect a significant loss in sales to the U.S. market. He added, "They can look for another country to absorb."

Trump, who was re-elected for a second term in the November 5 election, also announced plans to impose tariffs of 10 to 20 percent on imported goods in order to bring more industrial production back to the United States. In the case of Chinese products, the tariff would be a minimum of 60%.

China, a key member of BRICS, has been actively pushing to reduce the dominance of the U.S. dollar in international trade, with an emphasis on using its own currency, the yuan. Russia is also increasingly trading in yuan, and India has expressed interest in promoting the rupee in global commerce.

While the creation of a new BRICS currency has been discussed among its members, the idea has not made significant progress. Nonetheless, Trump’s threat comes as the discussion intensifies about reducing the dollar’s role in global trade. He made it clear that any attempt by BRICS to undermine the dollar would result in severe economic repercussions, emphasizing, "If any country tries to do that, they will have to say goodbye to the United States."

Trump will officially assume office again as President in January.
