Ukraine launched an attack on Russia using missiles provided by the United States.
Ukraine has struck Russian territory for the first time using US-supplied long-range missiles, with the attack taking place on Tuesday, according to Russian authorities.
The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that the strike targeted the Bryansk region, where Ukraine launched an assault this morning using Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS). Russian forces intercepted and destroyed five of the incoming missiles, while one was shot down. The ministry also stated that a military facility in the area caught fire as a result of missile debris.
Ukrainian media have also reported that the United States is preparing to launch an attack using missiles. However, the Ukrainian government has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed in a statement that the attack occurred at 3:25 p.m. local time. One missile ignited after its debris fell, but the fire was quickly brought under control. No casualties were reported from the incident.
Earlier, the Ukrainian military confirmed that it had targeted an ammunition depot in Russia's Bryansk region, though it did not specify whether ATACMS missiles were used in the strike.
The attack occurred at a depot near the city of Karachev, located about 100 kilometers from the border, with reports indicating that 12 explosions followed the assault.
Ukrainian media, citing military sources, suggested that US-supplied missiles were employed in the attack.
Meanwhile, ahead of today's attack, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a change to the country's nuclear policy. He stated that Moscow could resort to using nuclear weapons in response to a missile strike on Russian territory if a nuclear-armed country is involved in the attack. This shift in policy has raised concerns about the potential for a Russian nuclear response to an escalation in the conflict with Ukraine.
