Jimmy Carter's wish was realized when he cast his vote just 15 days after the centennial celebration.

Jimmy Carter voted in the U.S. presidential election on Wednesday, just 15 days after celebrating his 100th birthday, fulfilling a long-held wish. The former president had expressed his desire to live long enough to support Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

According to the Carter Center, he cast his vote by mail. After leaving the White House in 1981, Carter founded the Carter Center, a nonprofit organization focused on global diplomacy.

Initially an unpopular president, Carter's reputation grew significantly over the years. His home state of Georgia provided him the opportunity to participate in early voting.

Earlier this year, he shared with his family that living long enough to vote against his Republican opponent, Donald Trump, was more important to him than merely reaching his centennial. Ultimately, he accomplished both.

Early voting in Georgia began last Tuesday, with over 420,000 residents already having cast their ballots, as noted by election official Gabriel Sterling. The presidential election is set for November 5.

Carter, who served as a one-term president, has been in hospice care in Plains, Georgia, since February of last year. He made history as the first former U.S. president to reach the age of 100.
