Kamala and Trump have a conflict of words over the hurricane
Hurricane Milton has struck Florida, resulting in the deaths of at least 16 people. As the nation approaches the presidential election, the storm has become a focal point of political debate. Republican candidate Donald Trump has criticized the government's response to the disaster, while Democratic candidate Kamala Harris has accused him of spreading falsehoods.
Milton is reported to be the fifth-strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic. Just weeks earlier, Hurricane Helen had already impacted Florida, exacerbating the challenges faced by residents. Experts estimate that Milton could lead to up to $10 billion in insurance losses.
In response to the devastation, President Joe Biden's administration has announced extensive aid for those affected. However, Trump criticized the federal government's efforts, particularly in North Carolina, which suffered significant damage from Hurricane Helen.
Harris pushed back against Trump's remarks, stating, “It’s disheartening to see political games being played in the wake of these disasters,” during an event in Las Vegas, without directly naming Trump.
In the lead-up to the November 5 election, a Reuters/Ipsos poll shows Kamala Harris with a slight edge, receiving support from 46% of voters compared to Trump's 43%. This reflects a consistent trend from an earlier poll conducted in late September, where Harris was also ahead by six points.
The recent survey, conducted over four days ending last Monday, highlighted the economy as the top concern for voters. About 44% believe Trump has handled cost-of-living issues better, while 38% favored Harris on economic matters.
The poll also addressed immigration, revealing that 53% of participants view "illegal immigrants as a threat to public safety," while 41% disagreed. Interestingly, a previous poll from May indicated a narrow majority against immigration.
